Shopping Around Traverse City: What You’ll Find Nearby
The Traverse City area offers a variety of shopping opportunities to explore! Downtown is filled with unique specialty boutiques, souvenir shops, art galleries, and more. It’s the perfect way to spend an afternoon—browsing, shopping, and wrapping up with a delicious dinner at one of the many local restaurants.
For more traditional shopping, the Grand Traverse Mall is just 5 minutes away at the corner of US-31 and Airport Road. Here, you’ll find popular stores like Macy’s, JC Penney, Dunham’s, and Target. The mall also has a food court, along with smaller retailers like Spencer’s Gifts and GameStop. You’ll even discover a few local shops tucked in among the big names.
Just 2 minutes north of the mall is the Buffalo Ridge Shopping Center, home to Kohl’s, ABC Warehouse, Hobby Lobby, and more. If you’re looking for a meal or entertainment, the center also offers Outback Steakhouse and the Cherry Blossom 14 movie theater.
A bit further out, about 10 minutes east of the mall, you’ll find the Cherryland Center at the corner of Airport and Garfield Roads. This former indoor mall is now a strip mall, featuring Big Lots, Asian Buffet, and Traverse City’s Curling Club, Go Kart race track with more activities and shops expected soon.
For groceries, you’ll have plenty of options. Major chains like Walmart, Target, and Meijer are available, and for a more local experience, try Oryana West, a small co-op. Several stores, including Family Fare at Chums Corners, have pharmacies as well.

The area boast several farmer markets. All the markets offer fresh produce, local meats, breads and pastries and many other food items. You will also see many of our local artisans working their craft and selling their art.
Sara Hardy Downtown Farmers Market is operated by the DDA and is located in lot B at the southwest corner of Cass and Grandview Parkway. It is open Saturdays 7:30am to noon May through October. Wednesdays 8am to noon June through October. During Cherry Festival in July the market is moved to the Old Town Parking Garage on 8th street between Union and Cass Streets.
Farmers Market at the Grand Traverse Commons is open all year long. In the warmer month (May-October) the market is held outdoors on Mondays from 2-6. In the colder months (November-April) indoors in the Mercato corrido on Saturday mornings from 10am-2pm.
Interlochen Farmers Market includes 60 different vendors with about 1/2 being food vendors (produce, baked goods, syrups, seasonings, jams, etc). Local artisans have beautiful works of art for sale at very reasonable prices. Interlochen Farm Market is dog friendly.
