Exploring the beautiful trails of Northern Michigan can be an invigorating way to de-stress and reconnect with nature. There are many great trails with spectacular views within a 5-45 minute drive of Dyer Lake Vacation Home.
Most state parks have and local communities have hiking trails. Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy has many nature preserves, sanctuaries, parks and natural areas to explore. Little Traverse Conservancy has hiking trails, bike trails and more throughout Northern Michigan.
One of the best places that has a fantastic network of trails with absolutely amazing views is Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. The picture of our family on the Meet the Hosts page was taken at one of the many lookout points on the trails at the Dunes.

Remember that even if the trail says it is an easy hike, it’s important to be prepared to ensure your hike is both fun and safe. Here are some handy tips to help you avoid any missteps on the trail.
Plan Ahead & Stay Safe
It’s always safer to hike with a buddy, but if you prefer to go solo, let someone know your plans. Share where you’ll park, the trail you’re taking, and your expected return time. If something goes awry, having someone expecting your return can get you help faster.
Know Your Group’s Limits
Don’t push yourself or others beyond their comfort zone. Northern Michigan has trails for all experience levels. As a rule of thumb, if you can walk and talk comfortably, you’re hiking at the perfect pace. Pick a trail that everyone can enjoy without overexerting themselves.
Stay Connected
Always bring a fully charged cell phone. Northern Michigan’s trails are often remote, so cell service can be spotty. A power bank is a great backup, and it’s a good idea to turn your phone off or switch to airplane mode until needed. Carry a whistle or other signaling device in areas without cell coverage.
Be Weather-Ready
Michigan weather can be unpredictable! Always check the forecast before heading out. If bad weather is on the horizon, it’s better to wait. Summer hikes require plenty of water and snacks, like trail mix and nuts, to keep your energy up. In winter, dress in layers, and don’t forget your hat, gloves, and boots. Ice grips on footwear can be a lifesaver on slick trails.
Footwear Matters
Sturdy, rubber-soled hiking boots are best for dirt trails, while tennis shoes work for paved paths. In winter, add ice grips for better traction. Leave the flip-flops behind!
Stick Together
Put the slowest hiker near the front to keep everyone together. It might take a bit longer, but you’ll avoid losing anyone along the way and ensure everyone stays safe.
Keep Track of Time
Remember, however long it takes to hike to your destination, you’ll need time to get back! If any part of your hike is uphill, double the time it took to go down. Set a “turn around” time to avoid being caught on the trail after dark.
Be Cautious Near Water
Waterfalls, streams, and rapid waters can be risky. Slippery rocks or swift currents can be dangerous, so be careful when hiking near water, especially during icy or flooding conditions.
Bugs & Wildlife
Mosquitoes and ticks love the woods, so don’t forget bug spray. Long sleeves and pants can also help keep the critters away. Always check for ticks after your hike, and keep an eye out for local wildlife. It’s exciting to spot animals, but safety comes first—stay informed on how to handle wildlife encounters.
