A Magical Family Adventure in Northern Michigan
When you’re planning your family getaway to Traverse City, it can be easy to focus on beaches, wineries, and downtown shops. But if you’re looking for something unique, educational, and perfect for kids, the GT Butterfly House & Bug Zoo should be at the top of your list. Just minutes from Traverse City, this hidden gem brings the natural world to life in a way your whole family will remember. That’s exactly what we did when the Virginia kids came for their summer visit.
With Mom tied up on conference calls, Dad arriving the next day, Grandma had the joy of creating a little adventure. Our crew for the day included Anna (8), Brayden (6), and cousin Zoe (14). We started by swinging by Zoe’s gymnastics practice, watching her flips and jumps. After cheering her on, we headed to Williamsburg to see butterflies and insects!
Revisiting a Family Favorite
The last time we visited was back in 2019. Anna and Zoe were much smaller, and Brayden was still a newborn. The girls were wide-eyed as hundreds of butterflies floated around them. That trip left a lasting impression, and this time felt even more special since Brayden finally got to experience the magic too.
The first thing you see when you arrive are giant rhinoceros beetles in aquariums. Some were so big we joked that we wouldn’t want to see one crawling across our kitchen floor!
Why Visit the GT Butterfly House & Bug Zoo?
Step inside the butterfly gardens and you’re instantly surrounded by hundreds of free-flying butterflies from around the world. Bright blues, sunny yellows, and deep oranges flutter around you, sometimes landing right on your shoulder. It’s not only beautiful but also a chance for kids to learn about the butterfly life cycle, migration, and their importance in the environment.
Butterflies land on flowers, bird baths, and—if you’re lucky—on you.
The dazzling Blue Morpho butterflies stole the show. Their shimmering wings glow an electric blue, but when folded closed, the underside is brown with “eye spots.” I had bright blue streaks in my hair to match Anna’s colorful tips, and apparently, the butterflies approved. Several landed on my head, which made the kids howl with laughter.
We also met Bert and Ernie, two resident birds that help protect the butterflies by eating pests. Watching them dart around the greenhouse added even more life to the scene.
Fun in the Bug Zoo
Once we said goodbye to the butterflies (checking the mirrors for “hitchhikers” first!), we explored the Bug Zoo. This part is just as fascinating—sometimes creepy, always cool.
- Glowing scorpions: Under UV light, they shine a ghostly blue-green. The kids were given black lights to search for them, and they lit up like stars in the dark.
- Camouflaged insects: Walking sticks and leaf insects so well-hidden you had to look twice.
- Honeybee hive: A safe way to peek into the life of busy bees.
- Axolotls: The kids’ favorite—rare aquatic salamanders with feathery pink gills. Anna knew all about them already and proudly shared facts, like their ability to regenerate limbs.
We also spotted tarantulas, frogs, and salamanders. Each display sparked questions, laughter, and a little bit of awe.
Hands-On Learning for Families
One of the things that makes the GT Butterfly House & Bug Zoo special is how much it sparks curiosity. Children are encouraged to ask questions, observe, and even hold certain critters in a safe environment. It’s the kind of educational family activity in Michigan that’s fun, memorable, and sneaks in a little learning along the way.
If you’re staying at Dyer Lake Vacation Home, the Butterfly House makes for an easy half-day adventure.
Ice Cream & Smiles
Before heading home, we browsed the gift shop for souvenirs, then treated ourselves to ice cream at the hut across the parking lot. Sitting in the sun with cones in hand, we replayed our favorite moments—the butterflies in my hair, the glowing scorpions, the axolotls. Anna and Brayden capped the day by posing in butterfly wings for a photo, while Zoe chose to cheer from the sidelines.
A Perfect Day for Your Family Getaway
A trip to the Butterfly House is more than just sightseeing — it’s a chance to connect with nature, spark curiosity in your kids, and create lasting vacation memories. It’s about discovery. Kids learn about ecosystems, metamorphosis, and the hidden wonders of the insect world. Parents and grandparents get to watch that spark of curiosity ignite—and maybe even learn a few surprising things themselves.
For families staying at Dyer Lake Vacation Home, this is exactly the kind of outing that makes vacations unforgettable. The lake will always be waiting, but adventures like this create memories you’ll talk about for years. We will not wait 6 years for our next visit!
