Eight Days of Cherry-Picked Fun

It’s never too early to start planning—and booking—for this year’s National Cherry Festival! The town fills up fast, so secure your stay today!

Cups of Cherries at Cherry FestivalThis beloved tradition has deep roots in Northern Michigan’s history. Around 1910, local cherry growers began hosting informal “blessing of the blossoms” ceremonies each May. By 1925, the first Cherry Queen, Gertrude Brown, was crowned during the newly established Blessing of the Blossoms Festival, marking the start of a rich legacy. The following year, Hawkins Bakery crafted an impressive 3-foot cherry pie with 5,000 cherries, which was presented to President Calvin Coolidge. As the festival’s popularity grew, it expanded to a three-day event in 1930, with President Hoover attending the opening ceremonies. By 1931, the Michigan State Legislature officially declared it a national celebration, and Traverse City welcomed U.S. Navy ships and sailors to mark the occasion.

While the festival took a hiatus during WWII, it returned stronger than ever in 1948, eventually growing into the week-long celebration we know today. Since 1968, the festival has been a vibrant homage to the region’s cherry-growing heritage, offering food, fun, and family-friendly activities to over 500,000 visitors each year. Mark your calendars for June 28–July 5, 2025—this festival is bursting with excitement!
