Located along the shores of Lake Michigan about an hour and a half from Dyer Lake Vacation Home, this remarkable national park combines towering sand dunes, scenic overlooks, beautiful beaches, lush forests, and fascinating history. Whether you enjoy hiking, photography, sightseeing, or simply relaxing by the water, Sleeping Bear Dunes offers something for everyone.
It is easy to see why this area was named one of America’s most beautiful places.
What Makes Sleeping Bear Dunes So Special?
Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore protects more than 71,000 acres along Lake Michigan’s eastern shoreline. The park stretches for 35 miles and includes miles of sandy beaches, inland lakes, forests, historic sites, and the North and South Manitou Islands.
The most famous feature is the massive dune system that rises hundreds of feet above Lake Michigan. Some of the dunes tower as much as 450 feet above the water, creating breathtaking views that draw visitors from around the world.
The landscape was shaped thousands of years ago during the last ice age, leaving behind dramatic bluffs, crystal clear lakes, rolling forests, and some of the most scenic views in the Midwest.
Start with the Dune Climb
For many visitors, the Dune Climb is the first stop.
This giant hill of soft sand gives visitors the chance to experience the dunes up close. The climb can be challenging, especially on warm summer days, but the views from the top make the effort worthwhile.
You can climb as far as you like. Some visitors head only partway up, while others continue across the dunes toward spectacular views of Glen Lake and Lake Michigan.
Be sure to bring water, wear comfortable shoes, and plan extra time if you want to explore beyond the first ridge.
Take the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive
If hiking is not your thing, the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive is one of the easiest ways to experience the beauty of the park.
This 7.4-mile loop winds through forests and dune landscapes while offering several scenic overlooks and picnic areas. Along the route, you will find some of the most photographed views in Northern Michigan.
The Lake Michigan Overlook provides stunning views from high atop the dunes, while the Dunes Overlook offers panoramic views of the shoreline and surrounding landscape.
Many visitors consider this drive one of the highlights of their trip.
Explore the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail
The Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail is a paved multi-use trail that stretches more than 20 miles through some of the park’s most scenic areas.
The trail connects Empire, Glen Arbor, Glen Haven, and Good Harbor Bay, making it a great option for biking, walking, or a leisurely stroll.
Along the way, you will pass forests, beaches, dunes, and beautiful views of Glen Lake. Families, casual cyclists, and experienced riders all enjoy this trail because you can choose a section that matches your interests and activity level.
Discover the Park’s Maritime History
Sleeping Bear Dunes is more than just beautiful scenery.
The park preserves an important part of Michigan’s maritime history. One of the best places to learn about this history is Glen Haven Historic Village.
Once a busy port community serving ships traveling Lake Michigan, Glen Haven now offers visitors a glimpse into life along the Great Lakes during the late 1800s and early 1900s.
You can also visit the Sleeping Bear Point Coast Guard Station Maritime Museum to learn about shipwrecks, lifesaving crews, and the challenges of navigating the Great Lakes.
Enjoy the Beaches
Many visitors are surprised by how beautiful the beaches are at Sleeping Bear Dunes.
The Lake Michigan shoreline features miles of sandy beaches where you can swim, relax, hunt for rocks, or simply enjoy the view.
Water temperatures tend to be cooler than inland lakes, even during summer, but the clear water and stunning scenery make the beaches well worth a visit.
Several beach access points throughout the park provide opportunities to find a quiet spot away from larger crowds.
Take a Hike with a View
The park offers hiking trails for all skill levels.
Two of the most popular options include:
Empire Bluff Trail
This relatively short trail leads to one of the most spectacular overlooks in the park. From the bluff, visitors enjoy sweeping views of Lake Michigan and the surrounding shoreline.
Pyramid Point Trail
This scenic trail rewards hikers with incredible views from high above the lake. It is especially beautiful during the fall color season.
Both trails provide excellent opportunities for photography and enjoying the natural beauty of Northern Michigan.
The Legend Behind the Name
The name Sleeping Bear comes from an Ojibwe legend.
According to the story, a mother bear and her two cubs were escaping a great forest fire on the western shore of Lake Michigan. They swam across the lake toward Michigan, but the cubs became exhausted and disappeared beneath the waves before reaching shore.
The grieving mother bear reached land and waited atop a bluff for her cubs to return. The Great Spirit honored her devotion by creating North and South Manitou Islands where the cubs disappeared and transforming the mother bear into the great dune that overlooks the lake today.
The legend remains an important part of the area’s cultural heritage and adds another layer of meaning to this remarkable landscape.
Helpful Tips Before You Visit
A little planning can help make your visit more enjoyable.
- Purchase a park pass before entering the park. A standard vehicle pass is valid for seven days.
- Check current conditions before your trip, especially if you plan to hike or bike.
- Summer mornings are often the best time to climb the dunes before temperatures rise.
- Bring water, sunscreen, and comfortable walking shoes.
- If you bring your dog, review pet friendly areas before your visit.
- Be cautious near dune bluffs and steep drop offs.
One important safety reminder: some visitors hike down the steep dune faces toward Lake Michigan. While the trip down may seem easy, climbing back up a 450 foot sand dune can be extremely difficult. Park officials regularly assist exhausted visitors, and emergency rescues can result in significant fines.
