A Sweet Up North Tradition
If there’s one thing you have to take home from your Northern Michigan getaway—besides amazing memories and way too many photos of sunsets—it’s fudge.
Just like saltwater taffy in Atlantic City or beignets in New Orleans, fudge is the signature sweet of “Up North.” And no Traverse City vacation is complete without sampling this creamy, decadent treat.
So… Why Is Fudge Such a Big Deal?
Blame it on a happy accident in Baltimore. Back in the 1880s, someone “fudged up” a batch of caramels—and fudge was born. A few years later, that mistake made its way to Mackinac Island when a father-son duo, Henry and Jerome “Rome” Murdick, opened a candy shop using family recipes. Rome made candy up front while his dad built sails in the back. (Yes, really.)
Rome also did live fudge-making demos, and crowds couldn’t get enough of the action—or the aroma. Soon, every candy shop on the island was whipping up their own versions and putting on a show.
It’s a Sweet Show
Watching fudge being made is still part of the fun. Most local shops have big marble tables and windows where you can catch the process. Some even use fans to waft that warm chocolatey smell into the street. It’s basically marketing genius you can eat.
From the original chocolate to creative combos like cherry chocolate, maple walnut, and even salted caramel, every shop adds its own twist—many using local ingredients.
Don’t Worry—It Won’t Melt in Your Car!
Here’s a little secret: fudge doesn’t melt. It’s made with cream instead of butter, giving it a firm texture and longer shelf life. That means you can toss a few slices in your bag and still enjoy it back home (or freeze it for up to a year!).
So when you’re out exploring Traverse City’s shops or day-tripping to places like Leland or Suttons Bay, don’t skip the fudge. Get a slice… or three. You’ve earned it.
Whether you’re team peanut butter, maple pecan, or straight-up chocolate, you’re in for a treat. And hey, grab an extra slab—it makes a great gift. (Even if it’s a gift to yourself.)
